Commis is the only restaurant in Oakland, California with a Michelin star. Chef James Syhabout, an alumnus of El Bulli works in a small, unassuming location in Oakland's Piedmont neighborhood. The restaurant's initial menu only lists the ingredients used. At the end of the meal, after each dish is presented and described, the guest receives a menu listing each course they received. The wine list is a single page, with three columns, focusing mainly on local producers.
